About Me

WHO IS THE HANNEMAIDEN

I started the Your Kind of Salad blog in 2010. After moving from my hometown of Boston to Cincinnati, changing jobs and finally changing my career, I decided my little space of the internet needed an update as well. The hANNEmaiden was born out of my love of creation. Cooking, writing, knitting and curating interesting items for friends and family have become so much of what I do lately, it only felt right to bring it all together under the #hANNEmade umbrella.  I hope you’ll stay with me!

I love hearing from you, please feel free to email: anne65632@gmail.com

What does Bento mean in Japanese?

    1. Oh dear, I definitely didn’t get that far! Must have been on CD 9…but isn’t it a lacquered box or tray typically used to serve lunches? Now I’m dying to know….

I have a food challenge for the YKS lady.
Having 5 ladies over to lunch on a Saturday with 7 kids ages 7 months to 10 years old. Possibly a couple of husbands thrown in for good measure. WHAT DO I SERVE THEM?

    1. Oh Dahling, just call me Salad.

For your lunch – here is my suggestion – its spring, Grill out! Plus it will give the husbands something to do while the kids run around and the girlfriends talk 🙂
      – Hot Dogs/Veggie Dogs
      – Burger/Veggie Burger Sliders (both children and adults seem to love sliders)
      – Sausage or Chicken for the Carnivores, Shrimp for the Pescatarians (or people who like shrimp 🙂
      – Green Salad or Roasted Veg (but have a vegetable tray as well; I’ve found that children are more apt to dip their veggies 🙂
      – Crowd-Friendly Starch: Mashed Sweet Potatoes or WW Pasta Salad are perfect.
      – Dessert: Cut Fruit or Fruit Salad. For a treat: Cupcakes or mini-cupcakes or my newest dessert obsession.
      Homemade Ice Cream Sandwiches:
      – 2 dozen smallish cookies of your choosing (chocolate chip, oatmeal, peanut butter would be delicious)
      – 1 pint of softened ice cream of your choosing (vanilla, chocolate, peanut butter etc.)
      – Sprinkles, Shredded Coconut, Candy pieces (leftover freezer Halloween candy smashed up is perfect for this)

Simply put about a 1 tbs of softened ice cream on the flat side of a cookie, put another cookie on top of it. Press down lightly so the cookie lays flatter (and ice cream spreads to edges) – roll ice cream side through sprinkles, coconut or candy pieces. Place on a piece of parchment on a cookie sheet. Freeze for about an hour. Delicious!
      Have a great time!

-Your friends at Four Seasons Hotel Boston

    1. I very much enjoyed my stay at the Four Seasons; it was an absolute pleasure!

      Thank you for reading!

I love that you hate tomatoes!!! Me too – I avoid them at all costs. Only if I am feeling generous I will use cherry tomatoes in a salad so the juices do not contaminate the rest of it!

    1. Awesome! Love the tomato-hatred! I’ve TRIED to like them; I just can’t ((shudders)); red peppers are my go-to replacement 🙂
