My sister came into town for a whirlwind visit and we tried to get as much of the Cincinnati experience in as we could.
Friday night, we headed to the Hofbräuhaus in Kentucky; the first authentic Hofbräuhaus in America – love those fun facts!
We settled in the biergarten with a few steins of beer and some appetizers.
We spent the night catching up over beers and fried bits of love – a great start to our weekend!
Saturday morning, we headed to….Indiana. It was a tri-state kind of weekend.
We were there to check out the Hollywood Casino, fun!
We made a quick stop at the Bonbonnerie…..
…..and we hit the road to Lawrenceburg!
Driving back to Cincinnati, we passed a sign. A fateful sign. One that neither one of us had taken pause of before….
Yes, it was White Castle. The sister demanded to try this new-to-us burger classic; so we pulled into the drive-thru.
We shared an order of sliders and onion chips.
The verdict? The sliders were a tinier and less tasty version of a fast food burger in my opinion. Although its been about 7 years since I’ve had a fast-food burger, so I may be remembering wrong…. The onion chips were delightfully crunchy little bites of salty-oniony goodness; but definitely needed some kind of dipping sauce.
After making all the Harold and Kumar jokes we could, we headed back to my house to sloth for a while. We took a trip to the local Kroger and stocked up on some yummy fresh food items. So stuffed from our fast food treat; we kept dinner simple with Portobello Mushroom Spinach Salad. So easy, fresh and delicious.
Portobello Mushroom Spinach Salad
2 large Portobello Mushroom Caps
1 tbs olive oil
Sea Salt, Cracked Pepper
4 cups baby spinach, washed
1 scallion, chopped
1/2c. cooked quinoa
4 oz goat cheese, crumbled
1/2c. pita chips or croutons (optional)
Heat a grill pan (or outdoor grill) until medium hot. After gently wiping the mushroom caps with a damp cloth (to remove the dirt); drizzle olive oil, salt and pepper over the caps. Grill each side 3-4 minutes until tender. Set aside.
Sister’s Spinach Salad Dressing
THIS IS ADDICTIVE; make extra, seriously
1 tsp salt
½ tsp pepper
1 clove of garlic mashed into a paste
1 tsp of Worcestershire sauce
1 tsp of ground mustard
4 tbsp olive oil
3 tbsp of lemon juice
1 tbsp of parmesan cheese
In a large bowl, blend all ingredients well to emulsify. Add greens and scallions and quinoa to the dressing and toss well. Plate onto two separate plate. Place a portobello over each salad, add crumbled goat cheese and croutons. Serves 2.
After porch-settin’ and salad eatin’ for most of Saturday night; we were exhausted to do much more than watch some TV and crash.
Sunday morning dawned bright and HOT in the ‘Natti. Although we debated hitting the Bourbon Trail or the Ohio State Fair, in the end we just wanted to sit in a pool and drink beer.
Enter Coney Island’s Sunlite Pool.
Cincinnatians love their water parks; due to the lack of available coastline 🙂 Coney’s Island Sunlite pool is a HUGE pool with plenty of areas for swimming, lounging and diving (and some of the most attentive lifeguards I’ve ever seen, keep up the good work kids!)
We settled in the shallow end to soak up some sun and drink a beer…but not before we tried another Cincinnati classic: A Skyline chili coney.
What’s Skyline Chili?
Skyline is a Cincinnati chili institution…and deserves its own review (chili tease). The “Coney” is only one of their famous treats. Spoiler alert: the other one involves spaghetti. Stay tuned…in the meantime….What’s a coney?
Cheese Coney: Skyline’s classic Cheese Coney is a specially-made hot dog in a steamed bun, with mustard, covered with our original, secret-recipe chili, diced onions and a mound of shredded cheddar cheese.
Along with a coney; we enjoyed the Montgomery Inn’s famous Saratoga Chips. Thick-cut kettle chip served with BBQ sauce; so random and delicious.
(Cincinnati lunch style)
Properly stuffed, we got to lounging, getting sunburned (oops) and people-watching; it was fabulous.
We begrudgingly pulled ourselves away from the pool to head home and clean up. After 48 fabulous hours with one of my favorite people; my sister-friend was on the flight home to Boston. Sad Salad.
But not for long, I cleaned up my house, pulled myself together since the weekend wasn’t over yet!
On a whim Thursday I had bought a ticket to see TIM MCGRAW at Riverbend, our local outdoor concert venue. I got love for the country music and I was pumped to see a country music show in the ‘Natti.
Since the beau don’t do country; I met up with a co-worker and his friends for the show; and it was fabulous! Mr. McGraw did not disappoint. And dayum, is that man in SHAPE. I mean even my ghetto iphone picture of the screen you can see his arm muscles; whoa! You go Tim McGraw!
More than the show, the people-watching was UNREAL.Daisy Dukes, giant belt buckles and more than one or two Snooki-style bump hairdos (NOT worn ironically)….I mean amazing; I’m only sorry I don’t have better pictures (for the record, I was the nerd in the flip flops and maxi dress – I may as well have stamped YANKEE on my forehead…)
I was so happy and blessed that my sister could come out to the ‘Natti on an impromptu trip; that’s sisterly love…or the love of White Castle, you decide.
